What an amazing experience to have Eyes on Owls come to our school for second graders. We kicked off our owl unit with 5 different owls. We will be wrapping up our week on owls on Friday (if the snow allows). We will take an assessment on owls and what we have learned about habitats! We have also been comparing and contrasting between bats and owls and everything we have learned about them so far.
That very same day, students got to dissect their very own owl pellet! They loved every minute of it!!!
Next week we will take our Unit 2 Math Assessment and move on to Unit 3 after Thanksgiving.
We are also coming to the point in time where we night start switching up some RTI groups depending on student needs. If your child is going to start seeing reading or math support, I will reach out and contact you before we begin our new groups.
Report cards will be going home around December 14th. Grade close on December 3rd and conferences will begin shortly after. Please make sure to sign up for a conference so we can chat about your child and the progress they have made so far.
Enjoy the photos!
What an incredible learning experience just a short walk down town can be! I love our town and the layers of history within New Boston.
Our first stop was at the Historical Society Building where we watched a small video and met our guest speakers. We then traveled with our guest speakers past the North East Cafe, Nan's House, Parker Mill, the old Ice House grounds, through the woods, across the foot bridge ending up at the library for snack.
Please enjoy the photos taken from our walking field trip.
If you haven't stopped by our classroom lately...here are a few awesome things we have been working in in second grade...
After our Bat Unit, we worked on a bat acrostic poem. Other bat activities will be going home this week.
Pumpkins! During our pumpkin unit, we compared and contrasted different pumpkins. We weighed, measured and counted seeds!
Check out our hard work!
Just a reminder that our Walking Field Trip will be tomorrow. We will leave at 8:15am and return to the building right before lunch. Students will need to bring a snack and water in their lunch box that is easy to carry. We will be stopping for snack about half way through the walk. Please make sure to wear weather appropriate shoes, clothing, jackets, hat and mittens. It will be very chilly tomorrow morning...mid 30's.
Our Halloween celebration was a lot of fun! We had some amazing costumes in 2nd grade this year! Please enjoy the pictures below!
As a reminder...
Tuesday - No School - Voting Day and Teacher Workshop Day
Wednesday - is our visit with Eyes on Owls and we will get to meet some interesting feathered friends.
Friday - Spelling test and homework packet due
Just a reminder that we go outside TWICE a day for recess and the occasional fire drill where we are outside for 20 minutes. Please make sure your child comes to school dressed in a warm jacket, hat and gloves daily...
The second grade team has decided to postpone our walking field trip until next Monday, November 5th due to the rainy forecast tomorrow.
Fire Safety permission slips are going home in your child's backpack today. Please sign them and have them returned to school by this Monday.
Michelmas is happening at our school on Friday, October 19th. This is especially a fun year for second graders because they will be looking at the 3rd graders projects, knowing that they will be participating in Michelmas next year! For those of you new to Michelmas...here's what it is.
The 3rd graders spend weeks creating mini crafts at home to sell at Michelmas at home. The gym in turned into a craft fair on Michelmas Day. All classes will have an opportunity to visit the craft fair at some point throughout the day . Students can purchase goods if they choose too. The prices for crafts range from 0.50 to 5.00...The third graders use this money, 100% of the profits, for all of their field trips.
If you wish to send your child to school with money to spend, it needs to be in a ziplock baggie, labeled with their name on it. We have been practicing exchanging money at school but this would be a great opportunity to practice at home as well. There are 23 students and only 1 of me, so I will not be with each student as they make purchases. Please send your child only with money that is ok to spend. I think 1-5 dollars is appropriate.
We have been busy in second grade!
So we have voted and we are The Super Bobcats! I will start collecting a white t-shirt from every student. It can be a plain old white tee that you no longer need (Please NO lettering or designs on them, because we will be adding our Bobcat Logo). We will be tie dying these shirts and wearing them on our field trips, field days, etc.
Last week I started having one boy and one girl Star Student each week. These students are chosen base on their positive Bobcat behavior from the week before. They get a special chair pocket on their chair with their name on it and they will get special line privileges and lunch with the teacher that week.
Just a reminder that homework and completed reading logs are due on Fridays. This week, we will have our first math assignment for homework as well!
Last week we completed our first Math Unit 1 Assessment and next week we will take our Unit 1 Wonders Assessment.
Beginning Unit 2 in Wonders there will be a challenge spelling list. If students get a 100% on their Spelling Pretest on Monday morning, they are eligible to study the Challenge list or "List B" that week. I will highlight the appropriate list for your child on the homework paper they bring home Monday.
October 29th - Walking Field Trip to Down Town - More Info and Permission slip will be coming home soon!
October 31st - Halloween Parade and Classroom Party - I will be sending home a SignUp Genius for parents to sign up for food and non food items for our Halloween Celebration...More info to come!
Snacks - Students are forgetting snacks at home. Please make sure they have money on their lunch account so they can get a goldfish snack, etc from the cafeteria if this happens. I do not have extra snacks on hand in the classroom. If you would like to donate a box of snacks, I will keep it on hand for emergency snacks in the classroom.
Once again, thank you parents for all of your support!
Please enjoy some photos of our math centers and our Reading Buddies. We went outside and collected leaves and did some leaf rubbings with our reading buddies on Friday.
We have been working so hard on being good bobcats and rising to classroom expectations! We are working on being Safe, Respectful and Responsible in the classroom. A few things we are still working on are; raising our hand versus shouting out and wondering around the room when we should be working at our desks independently. I will be going over our Clip Up and Down System on Monday night at back to school Night.
Yes! Monday, Sept 24th is Back to School Night for PARENTS, We will meet in my classroom from 6:40-7:10 pm Sharp!...please leave kiddos at home! We will have a lot to discuss in a short amount of time ans then I would love to open up the floor for any questions you may have.
A few things...
Homework - Needs to be turned in on Fridays
Change of Plans at Dismissal - NEEDS to be in a note or students will be sent home their normal way that we have on file...this is creating a lot of anxiety in students when it is not communicated to them by parents what their "new" plan is.
Reading Groups and RTI - begin next week
Paper Towels - water bottles are constantly being dropped on the floor. I would love some absorbent rolls of paper towels to aid in clean up....school ones just don't cut it!
This week was a lot of fun working on our science projects on the life cycle of a butterfly...these will be shared with parents on Monday night. We also enjoyed a special treat today. We filled our class bucket for the first time and I treated the students to ice cream. We also finished up our ice cream writing projects!
Here are some photos to enjoy of out last 2 weeks...
I hope everyone enjoyed their day off. On Monday we talked about what Patriot's Day means and the brave heroes of 9/11/01. We wanted to show our appreciation to our local heroes for helping keep us safe every day...right here in our own town. So, we wrote letters to our local firefighters and police officers here in New Boston and to two dad's in our classroom that also serve. I delivered these letters to the police department and fire station this morning and they were very surprised and thankful for the support of our students.
We are off to an amazing start this year!
*I can begin posting classroom photos as soon as I have everyone's photo release forms in. Thank you :)
What an awesome first day of second grade! We had our first fire drill and school assembly. We talked a lot about BOBCAT behavior; SAFE, RESPONSIBLE, RESPECTFUL. We also went over our classroom, bathroom, hallway, recess and lunch room expectations....It was a lot of information for one day so we will continue to review procedures daily until no longer needed.
A FEW THINGS.....The Office Sent home a few important papers, as did I. It is a lot for us parents, especially if you have multiple children....I have two children of my own so I completely understand. Please make sure to send these documents back to school by THIS FRIDAY. The WHITE Emergency Verification Form is also very important to return...even if there are no changes. We need all parents to verify and sign this paper EVEN IF THERE ARE NO CHANGES.
Monday - Music
Tuesday - Gym - MUST wear sneakers
Wednesday - Art
Thursday - Library
Friday - Social Thinking with Ms. Brown
FYI...Our classroom is VERY TOASTY! Please make sure that your kiddo is wearing summer clothing and sent in with a water bottle so we can stay hydrated throughout the day. Water bottles are very wet and sweaty and leaking on our desks....so if you have an old sock to wrap around it that helps....I will also be bringing some in to help with this as well...
Overall, I thought we had a very successful day. Our class was showing excellent Bobcat behavior during the assembly and lunch today!!! Way to go! I will keep you updated on a weekly basis but I will reach out individually if needed.
Please mark your calendars for Monday, September 24th at 6:40pm. This will be Back to School Night for PARENTS ONLY. We will go over our second grade curriculum and I will answer any questions you may have before hand.
Thank you all for your support!
